The MARLIN(G) / MARTLING Family

 of Raynardton,

Yarmouth, County, Nova Scotia

The village of Raynardton lies north of Tusket, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, Canada, along the Tusket River and borders Lake Vaughn. [See Map]

The origin and ethnic background of the MARLING name in Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia was unknown to my family and to researchers I spoke with at the Argyle Township Court House and Archives in Tusket, Nova Scotia. We assumed that the name was English. MARLING is not and has never been a prolific name in Yarmouth County and perhaps, for that reason, there has not been much research done.

In a column called “In My Day”, written by Minnie Hilton she writes “…according to Historians between 1785 and 1796, the Lake Vaughn settlers come up from Tusket way and built their homes around the shores of the Lake, as of course there were no roads there then in Raynardton or Tusket Lakes. Where the roads and farms now are was completely forest, and they tell that moose meat was the easiest thing you could get for your dinner. The first five (settlers) were Job Reynard, Major Samuel Andrews, John Wood, BARENT MARLING, and James Hatfield”.

In the Census of 1871 for Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, there are only three families with the name MARLING, or a variation thereof.

The first is a Peter Marling listed at age 60, with his wife, Mary A., and five children. His residence is listed as “West side of Tusket River”.

The next family listed is a William Marlin, age 47, with his wife, Kezia, and five children. His residence is listed as “Kempt” (Kemptville).

The third family is a Barnett Marlin, age 62, and his wife, Elizabeth, and four children. His residence is Yarmouth proper.

I have connected the Peter Marling family with the Barnett Marlin (hereinafter listed as “Barnet Marling”) family listed above.  At this time, I have not completed my research on the William Marlin(g) family and how they may be related.

In trying to connect my great grandfather Peter Marling (1811-after 1881) who resided in Raynardton, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, with Barnet Marling (1809-1879), who also lived in Yarmouth County, by chance I came across the surname MARTLING (also spelled as MARTLINGHS) on the Internet. The Barent MARTLING mentioned below was too close to the Barnet Marling of Yarmouth County to be a coincidence.

The History of Staten Island

by Charles W. Lang, New York, 1930, Vol 2,

states that

the first Martling in America was Barent Martling, born in Staten Island in 1676, son of

Johannes Martling, a Huguenot who fled from France to the island

of St Eustace, in the Leeward Islands, West Indies, and then to

America. Barent married in 1702, Deliante (Deborah) Van Namen. In

1718 he served in the militia and in 1736 he was a Justice of the

Peace in Staten Island.

This discovery was the clue that “opened the flood gates”, as they say, and allowed me to put together the following information.  I believe the first Marling  to Nova Scotia was the Barnet Marling listed below and that he arrived in Nova Scotia as BARENT MARTLING and the name was soon Anglicized to Barnet MARLING.

When researching the name Martling, you will often see other names that are common in Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia history. The town of Tusket, NS was settled by Loyalists, including many Dutch families from New York including Westchester County and Staten Island.  The names Lent, Gavel, and Hatfield to name a few, can be found associated with Martling in the early history of New York and New Jersey.

United Empire Loyalists Monument

Tusket, Yarmouth County

Arriving from New Jersey and New York late in the fall of 1783, twenty-five United Empire Loyalist families came, many with their Negro slaves, to Shelburne. After spending a bitterly cold winter there, they moved on to find a more favorable place, and settled in Tusket in the spring of 1785.

The majority were Dutch. One remarked in her journal: "At this time there was no one settled on the river, but the French… The river abounded with fish, salmon and herring; and there was a large business carried on exporting them to the West Indies."

Located on the banks of the Tusket River, the village of Tusket became a major shipbuilding centre and many of the fine, old homes of the community date to the Golden Age of Sail.

The plaque reads:

In proud memory of those United Empire Loyalists, the majority of them of Dutch origin, who, defeated and despoiled, were compelled to find refuge here following the American Revolution. Arriving here, the first in 1784, they established new homes in the wilderness, and have made a most noteworthy contribution to the progress and development of this province and nation. "They sacrificed all save honour."

Generation No. 1

1.      BARNET1 MARLING (Source: 1791 Capitation Tax, Shelburne, Nova Scotia.) was born ABT  1749, and died 15 Nov 1836 in Tusket River, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia (Source: Obit: Yarmouth Herald December 2, 1836.)

According to Peter Crowell, Archivist at the Argyle Court House, Tusket, NS, Barnet was probably buried in Tusket in what is known as the old "Tusket Cemetery", Inc about 1785. There are few stones remaining, not one for Barnet Marling. Mr. Crowell states that if Barnet was buried on  his original property, family tradition would probably have recorded that.

Barnet Marling is mentioned in book, KING'S BOUNTY by Marion Robertson on Page 296. Listed among those who came to Shelburne, NS from New York and other places in 1783/4. He is not listed in the Shelburne Index, so he apparently did not stay in Shelburne long.

From correspondence with Shelburne Historical Society in 2002......."Barnet Marling arrived in Shelburne and received the standard town Lot (60 feet by 120 feet) in Patterson's Division. He was not listed as paying taxes in 1786/87 so it is safe to assume that he left quickly".

1791 Capitation Tax in Shelburne, Nova Scotia.......listed Bernard Marling, Ship Carpenter.

Obituary says "one of the first Settlers of Shelburne."  See Documents Page
